A new survey conducted in El Salvador confirms the limited use of Bitcoin among citizens and highlights a decline in adoption.

A study conducted by the Francisco Gavidia University (UFG) revealed that only 7.5% of citizens in El Salvador use Bitcoin for transactions. The survey was conducted last September and involved 1,224 people, most of whom were aged between 18 and 29.

Ninety-two percent of respondents stated that they do not use Bitcoin in their daily lives, and 0.5% were unsure or did not understand the question. Regarding national priorities, only 1.3% mentioned Bitcoin, while the majority indicated education and industrial development as key sectors.

Social context

Despite the limited use of Bitcoin, President Bukele continues to receive significant support from citizens. In the survey, Bukele scored 8.43 out of 10 regarding his performance as head of state, while the government as a whole received an average rating of 7.49. Additionally, about 80% of respondents expressed positive or neutral feelings about the current economic situation.

Decrease in usage

A previous study published last January by the José Simeón Cañas Central American University (UCA) had already reported a decline in Bitcoin adoption, with a usage rate of 12%. In an interview with Time, President Bukele admitted that he had hoped for higher adoption rates when he introduced the Ley Bitcoin in September 2021.
