The wallet, launched last July, was initially available only to early-access users.
Proton, the Swiss company known for its communication services like Proton Mail and Proton VPN, has announced that its non-custodial Bitcoin wallet, Proton Wallet, is now available to all users on iOS, Android, and the web.
Proton Wallet aims to democratize self-custody, making it more intuitive and accessible even for less experienced users.
Key features of the wallet include:
- End-to-end encryption, leveraging Proton Mail’s expertise
- The ability to send bitcoin via email address
- Full user control over cryptographic keys
- Open-source code
Andy Yen, Proton’s founder and CEO, stated:
“We believe empowering users to have digital freedom also requires financial freedom in addition to privacy.”
In 2014, the company started using Bitcoin to bypass PayPal’s temporary block during Proton’s initial crowdfunding campaign.
