The Spanish court confirms the suicide but doubts persist

The death of John McAfee, the well-known British-American tech billionaire, known for being the creator of the first commercial antivirus software, was officially declared a suicide by a Spanish court. This decision comes after an appeal from McAfee’s family, which requested a more thorough investigation into his death. However, the court’s decision still leaves many unanswered questions.

A sudden disappearance

John McAfee was found dead in his cell in the Brians 2 prison in Barcelona, on June 23, 2021, shortly after his extradition to the United States for tax evasion was approved. McAfee, known to be a staunch supporter of cryptocurrencies, had been incarcerated for eight months, after being arrested following years of evading American law enforcement.

Contrary to those who only saw him as an antivirus pioneer, McAfee was also a strong supporter and user of cryptocurrencies. Everything began in 2011, when McAfee read the Bitcoin whitepaper. He was fascinated, understood the enormous potential of the math underlying Bitcoin and became a strong supporter, believing that it could change the world.

The shadow of doubt over McAfee’s death

Even though the autopsy had already concluded that McAfee had committed suicide and the Spanish court rejected the family’s appeal, the shadow of doubt persists. McAfee posted on Twitter two years before his supposed suicide: “If I suicide myself, I didn’t“.

Getting subtle messages from U.S. officials saying, in effect: "We're coming for you McAfee! We're going to kill yourself". I got a tattoo today just in case. If I suicide myself, I didn't. I was whackd. Check my right arm.$WHACKD available only on https://t.co/HdSEYi9krq🙂 pic.twitter.com/rJ0Vi2Hpjj
