Problems with Ethereum’s Dencun upgrade: what happened?

The Ethereum Dencun upgrade has been activated on the Goerli testnet but was not finalized as expected: the details.

The much-anticipated Ethereum upgrade, named Dencun, was implemented on the Goerli testnet on Wednesday, January 17. However, it was not finalized within the expected timeframe. Data indicates that the upgrade was activated at 6:32 UTC but did not achieve consensus and was not finalized on the testnet. Developers expect the current issues to be resolved in the coming days. Some believe that these problems are due to low participation and the failure of some validators to update their software.

The Dencun implementation

The implementation of Dencun on the Goerli testnet is part of a three-phased approach aimed at establishing a new, less costly method for data storage on the Ethereum blockchain. This method, known as ‘proto-danksharding,‘ will increase data availability capacity and help reduce transaction costs for layer 2 blockchains – networks used as an alternative to process transactions on the Ethereum blockchain.

The near future of Ethereum

In the coming weeks, the upgrade to the Sepolia testnet will take place, followed by the Holesky testnet. Dencun will represent the most significant update for Ethereum, technically a hard fork, since last year’s Shapella upgrade, which enabled withdrawals of staked ether (stETH).
