The mining industry continues to expand: Marathon Digital opens a new facility in Finland with the aim of providing heating to a town of 11,000 inhabitants.

The United States company Marathon Digital has launched a new two-megawatt mining center in the Satakunta region of Finland. This move is part of the company’s global diversification strategy.

The company intends to use the new facility also to heat a town of 11,000 inhabitants through a process known as district heating, which involves centrally heating water and distributing it through underground pipes.

District heating is a centralized heating system that allows the distribution of heat, in the form of hot water or steam, from a centralized production plant to multiple buildings or users through a network of underground pipes.

CEO Fred Thiel stated:

“We are not just producing digital assets; we are heating homes and integrating sustainable practices into our business model. We believe that this kind of innovation can drive the advancement of the digital asset compute industry and further strengthen Marathon‘s leading position in the field.”

Marathon is exploring innovative ways to use its mining centers to promote sustainability. Adam Swick, the company’s Chief Growth Officer, stated:

“This pilot project in Finland is our first attempt to convert the heat that we produce as a byproduct of our operations into a valuable resource for a local community.”

International presence

Marathon, headquartered in Florida, operates in North America at sites such as Texas, Nebraska, and North Dakota. Last year, the company entered the United Arab Emirates market and launched a new 27-megawatt project in Paraguay. Last May, Marathon reached an agreement with the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum of Kenya to support the country’s energy development.
