Alleged theft of sensitive data from Coin Cloud, a Bitcoin ATM company, by unidentified hackers

Reported theft of sensitive data

A group of unidentified hackers compromised Coin Cloud, a Bitcoin ATM company, stealing photographs and personal information of thousands of customers. The information obtained would include sensitive data, including social security numbers, name, address, date of birth, profession, phone number, and more, as shared by vx-underground, a reputable cybersecurity source.

The source code of the Coin Cloud system

In addition to personal information, the hacker group has reportedly claimed possession of the backend system’s source code of Coin Cloud.

Coin Cloud, active since 2013, until the declared bankruptcy in February 2021, was managing over 4,000 machines between the United States and Brazil. Despite press inquiries, it was not possible to get any comment from the company. The company declared bankruptcy in February due to “business difficulties and legal issues”, which resulted in losses of 40 million dollars in the first nine months of the last year of activity, as detailed by the former Ceo to the Wall Street Journal.

Spread of information

Vx-underground reported to The Block that the unidentified hacker would have shared the stolen information in private channels, risking that the database could be published on the web shortly.
