Why Atlas21?

The term Atlas is rich in meaning. It stems from mythology to encompass geography, anatomy, political and economic theory. Its various interpretations revolve around a common concept: responsibility.

In Greek mythology, Atlas is a Titan often depicted with the Earth on his shoulders. The image represents not only endurance and brute force, but also and above all the burden of keeping the entire planet alive. The popular expression ‘carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders’ comes from this.

That volume that one flips through to this day – but particularly before the spread of the Web – to gather information about the world, is not a simple map. The Atlas is a complete guide to the geography of the world: it includes political, physical and thematic maps that give an account of elements such as climate, population density and economic activities in the areas analysed.

Even in anatomy, the Atlas is the first cervical vertebra of the spine. It is the vertebra that supports the skull, the very centre of our body.

Ayn Rand, considered one of the most influential figures in libertarian thought, has in Atlas Shrugged her most successful work. The novel tells of a predatory government that appropriates much of the wealth of its citizens in the name of the common good. It tells of the exploits of the most productive individuals – the Atlases of society, those who generate the value without which the population’s standard of living could not be sustained – who decide to go on strike to put an end to the collectivist dystopia. In the Randian context, the Atlas is the entrepreneurial and productive force in a scenario that exploits it to bear the weight of society as a whole.

What does this have to do with a news website on Bitcoin?

A Necessary Cure

Bitcoin was born at the same time as the first serious cracks were shown to the world by the traditional financial system. The genesis of the great crisis was the perfect time to give birth to a life-saving instrument that had already been under consideration for three decades. As the years have passed, the cracks have widened and the fragile foundations of the fiat bubble are increasingly struggling to hold up a system that has failed in its mission to guarantee equal access to value for all.

Inflation, stagflation and hyperinflation, monetary colonialism, credit bubbles, stimulus and short-sighted policies continue daily to widen the scissor of economic inequality under the blows of the Cantillon effect. Not only in Europe, in the United States or in China; in the whole world.

Money is nothing but a technology. Not just any technology, but the most extraordinary one of all. It is the technology that allows individuals to mutually and voluntarily exchange the fruits of their labour and, therefore, of their time. Money constitutes 50% of every exchange that takes place in the world. It is the circulatory system of society and, although not immediately apparent, its state of health influences every aspect of everyday life.

The gears of the financial system, clumsily and monopolistically managed by central banks, nation states and financial institutions – and rusted by the fanciful notion that value can be generated or stimulated by creating new money out of thin air -, infect everything they touch. Even if the media identifies the culprit of contemporary ills in the enemy of the day – the migrant, the entrepreneur, the multinational, the homosexual, the neighbour, the capitalist – the origin is to be found where the blood of society circulates: in money.

Bitcoin: the Atlas of Tomorrow

Fix the money, fix the world – a popular expression in this field – is perhaps one of the most hyperbolic and concrete at the same time. Money, the technology that holds the world on its shoulders, is sick.

At Atlas21 we believe that Bitcoin is the Atlas of tomorrow. We believe that in order to heal it we need a digital currency that is non-inflationary and in whose generation everyone can indiscriminately participate. We believe that the greatest hope for a better future is the greatest attempt to restore real value to currency – work obtained through investment in physical and energy resources, because value is not created from nothing.

To make this happen, however, a widespread awareness of the true nature and functioning of Bitcoin is required. An awareness that cannot be achieved with fragmented, inaccurate information or information tainted by conflicts of interest.
