Louisiana becomes the first U.S. state to accept digital asset payments for state services.

On September 17, John Fleming, State Treasurer of Louisiana, announced that residents can now pay for state services using digital assets. Payment options include Bitcoin on-chain, the Bitcoin Lightning Network, and the USDC stablecoin. The first transaction was made through the Lightning Network and involved paying a fine to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

The initiative stems from a collaboration between the State of Louisiana, Bead Pay, and other local partners. Fleming stated:

“By introducing cryptocurrency as a payment option, we’re not just innovating; we’re providing our citizens with flexibility and freedom in interacting with state services.”

The cryptocurrencies received will be converted into U.S. dollars immediately after payment.

Last June, Louisiana amended its legislation to ban CBDCs and set rules for digital asset miners and node operators. This law prohibits the state from participating in tests, accepting, or requiring payments using a CBDC.
