Nitter.net is offline and development is suspended after the August 24 cease-and-desist letters

Nitter, an open-source project that allowed users to read X posts without logging in or opening the app, received cease-and-desist letters from X Corp. demanding the permanent removal of Nitter instances and the repository. Nitter.net is offline and development is suspended while its creator seeks legal assistance.

The developer known as Zedeus told TechCrunch that similar letters were sent to other instances. Nitter also supported sites such as XCancel, which allow users to view X posts directly.

The letter reviewed by TechCrunch accuses Nitter of unlawfully using and circumventing X’s API and associated data. According to X’s lawyers, the project collected X data and accessed accounts and session tokens in violation of the platform’s rules. The cease-and-desist letter cites the Texas Harmful Access by Computer Act and the Lanham Act, setting a deadline of 5:00 p.m. EST on August 25 for the shutdown.

In 2024, Nitter.net had already gone temporarily offline after new restrictions on X’s API. Nitter retrieved public posts and removed advertising, tracking cookies, and JavaScript.
