The Bitcoin Development Fund allocates more than 500 million satoshis

The Human Rights Foundation has announced grants for 16 projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America through the Bitcoin Development Fund. The funding exceeds 500 million satoshis and marks the organisation’s second funding cycle in 2026.

Supported projects include BitSpenda, which connects Lightning wallets and mobile money accounts in Nigeria, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda and Ghana, and Bitzed, a Zambian platform that enables users to buy bitcoin through mobile money and receive it in a Lightning wallet. Project Island Resilience plans to add offline payments via Bluetooth, NFC and e-cash to Flash.

The grants also cover Bitcoin and wallet development. Libbitcoinkernel turns Bitcoin code’s security and transaction rules into reusable software modules. Funding for Floresta supports the integration of a lightweight node into wallets to verify data locally. BDK-Dart will receive funds for a new release and a reference wallet. WalletScrutiny will continue verifying that software distributed by wallets matches its source code.

HRF also included communication tools based on Nostr. The grant for Vector will support its launch on iOS and desktop, as well as encrypted voice and video calls. Flotilla Chat, developed by the Coracle client, separates user identity from the hosting provider and will receive funding for role-based access controls, voice chat and native Bitcoin funding tools. OpenAlert will develop anonymous, end-to-end encrypted text and audio alerts programmed to self-destruct.
