Blockstream’s Jade introduces Lightning Network support via Liquid, combining the security of offline custody with the speed of micropayments.

Blockstream has announced that the Jade device now supports the Lightning Network, enabling instant transactions while keeping private keys completely offline.

Thanks to an update released by the company through version 5.2.0 of the Blockstream App (formerly Green), the Jade device can now receive and send Lightning transactions while keeping funds securely stored in cold storage.

“This is a breakthrough for self-custody,” said Jeff Boortz, Chief Product Officer at Blockstream.

The mechanism behind the feature relies on a three-layer architecture integrating the Lightning Network, Liquid Network, and the main Bitcoin timechain. When a user receives a Lightning payment through the Blockstream app, the software automatically generates a Lightning invoice and triggers an atomic swap.

This process instantly converts the incoming payment into Liquid Bitcoin (LBTC), which is then deposited into the wallet secured by the Jade device. The device does not need to be connected to receive the payment, as the keys remain constantly offline.

For sending payments, the process works in reverse: the user enters a Lightning invoice in the application, which converts LBTC into Lightning liquidity. The Jade device signs the transaction before the funds leave the wallet, preserving the cold storage security model.

Peter Bain, Chief Marketing Officer at Blockstream, stated:

“This launch lets you receive bitcoin instantly over Lightning, hold it securely in a Jade-protected wallet, and move to the base Bitcoin layer whenever they choose. The result is faster payments, stronger self custody, and fewer unnecessary transactions.”
