According to Bloomberg, EEP cut supplies to prioritise households and producers
Ethiopia has reportedly reduced electricity supplied to Bitcoin miners to 23% of contractual levels. Bloomberg reports that the measure was adopted by Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP).
EEP CEO Ashebir Balcha said El Niño worsened drought conditions, reducing water inflows into reservoirs by 20%. According to the report, EEP cut supplies to miners to prioritise households and producers.
Balcha said EEP initially reduced deliveries to 75% of contractual levels, then to 50% and finally to 23%. The company will reassess conditions in October and may impose further cuts or limit electricity exports to neighbouring countries.
According to the report, Bitcoin miners accounted for 35% of EEP’s revenue in the last fiscal year and consume nearly one-third of Ethiopia’s electricity production. Phoenix Group had increased its mining capacity in Ethiopia to 132 megawatts in April 2025.
