Hodl day: un errore di battitura diventato un simbolo della comunità Bitcoin

The story of a term born from a drunken post on Bitcointalk.

In the Bitcoin world, certain terms transcend their original meaning, evolving into cultural phenomena. “HODL” is one such term, born from a drunken post on the Bitcointalk forum.

It was December 18, 2013, when a user known as GameKyuubi experienced a moment of deep frustration. Bitcoin’s price was falling, and after a few glasses of whiskey, he decided to vent his emotions in a post on Bitcointalk—a post that would go down in Bitcoin history.

He intended to write “holding” but ended up typing “HODLING”—a typo that forever changed the word within the Bitcoin community. His rant, a mix of self-awareness and critique of professional traders, emphasized his determination to resist market volatility.

The post, riddled with typos and written in a raw, unfiltered tone, described his struggle to avoid selling during a crash, acknowledging his lack of trading expertise. “I’m a bad trader,” he wrote, “but in a zero-sum game such as this, traders can only take your money if you sell.”

Minutes later, other forum members embraced the term. User elux replied with a simple “HODL!”, and from that moment, the term began to spread rapidly.

Today, “HODL” has become a meme in the Bitcoin community, symbolizing resilience, patience, and belief in Bitcoin’s long-term potential.

The original Bitcointalk thread by GameKyuubi now has over 2,600 replies.
