The organization leaves behind its Salvadoran program to focus on training Bitcoin educators worldwide.

The non-profit organization My First Bitcoin has announced the conclusion of its collaboration with the Salvadoran Ministry of Education. The decision marks a turning point for the educational initiative that has trained over 27,000 students across the country.

Founded in 2021 by American activist and journalist John Dennehy, the organization has decided to close its physical headquarters in El Salvador and adopt a fully remote work model, with a global outlook.

“Our ambition was always to change the world, but we had to start with a single student, then a single city, then a single nation and now we are ready to raise the potential impact from 6 million people to 8 billion,” said founder Dennehy.

The organization announced that its new mission will focus on supporting educators and community projects around the world, providing open-source materials and educational tools for teaching.

The partnership with El Salvador

In 2023, My First Bitcoin entered into a partnership with the country’s Ministry of Education to integrate its “Bitcoin Diploma” program into public schools by 2024. The initiative offered free Bitcoin education to Salvadoran citizens.

Arnold Hubach, communications director at My First Bitcoin, told Cointelegraph that the collaboration with the Ministry of Education ended in April 2025, “without any specific reason being shared with us.” Currently, no replacement initiatives are planned by Salvadoran authorities.

The closure of the My First Bitcoin program follows the $1.4 billion funding agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). According to an IMF report published last July, El Salvador has not purchased any new bitcoins since signing the agreement in December.
