Trump says he will listen to advisers on Bitcoin accumulation
On August 19, the total public debt of the United States reached $40.049 trillion. About $32.266 trillion was held by the public, while $7.782 trillion consisted of debt owed to federal accounts, including trust funds.
The total has more than doubled from the roughly $19.95 trillion recorded when Donald Trump took office in January 2017. The debt had surpassed $39 trillion in March, adding another trillion in about five months.
The Congressional Budget Office projects that interest costs alone will reach about $1 trillion in fiscal year 2026 and up to $2.1 trillion in 2036 under current law.
Trump said that the possibility of accumulating significant amounts of Bitcoin has been discussed and that he will listen to the recommendations of advisers, including SEC Chairman Paul Atkins and his team. The statement did not include a plan for market purchases.
The existing Strategic Bitcoin Reserve consists primarily of bitcoin seized in criminal cases.
