The survey includes 25,880 interviews across 25 countries

The Cornell Bitcoin Adoption Index reports the results of a survey on the use of Bitcoin in 25 countries. According to the report, El Salvador, Venezuela and Nigeria lead the ranking by share of respondents who said they had owned bitcoin at least once.

The report links the findings to economies with unstable national currencies and difficult access to dollars or reliable banking services. It describes Bitcoin as a practical means of overcoming these difficulties.

Among the accounts collected, a Venezuelan respondent said Bitcoin was faster and less risky than other methods of obtaining dollars. A Nigerian respondent reported being able to spend bitcoin while travelling in six African countries.

58% of respondents said they did not know that the supply of bitcoin is limited to 21 million coins. The research was conducted by Morning Consult in partnership with Cornell University’s Tech Policy Institute, the Cornell Bitcoin Club, the Human Rights Foundation and the Reynolds Foundation. The survey asked 125 questions to 25,880 people between 16 December 2024 and 10 March 2025.
