The Ministry of Economy confirms that data belonging to individuals and professionals was accessed and extracted. The estimate of nearly 700,000 taxpayers has not been verified by the government.

The French Ministry of Economy and Finance has confirmed that a cyberattack led to the access and extraction of tax data belonging to both individuals and professionals. The announcement came on Thursday 13 August, after a “malicious actor” claimed the day before to have breached the systems of the Direction générale des Finances publiques (DGFiP) at the end of June.

Investigations confirmed the intrusion but remain ongoing to determine which data was accessed or taken and the exact number of taxpayers affected. The ministry stated it will publish further findings and that each affected individual will receive a personal notification detailing the data potentially exposed and, where necessary, the precautions to take.

Monitoring platform FrenchBreaches estimated nearly 700,000 taxpayers were involved, based on information attributed to those allegedly responsible for the attack. The figure has not been confirmed by the government: ministry spokespeople did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment on the estimate.
