Huawei has unveiled the Kirin 950 Pro, a processor the company says is free of US technology. Huawei says the chip’s LinxiCore cores, GPU and neural processing unit use its own designs.
The Kirin 950 Pro is used in the new Mate XT2, a three-screen foldable smartphone. Huawei says the Tau Scaling architecture brings components closer together on the die, reducing their size and improving performance without using the most advanced manufacturing processes employed by TSMC and Intel.
Analysts believe Huawei has made notable changes to the silicon, but not decisive progress. Huawei has not indicated plans to adapt the chip for other uses.
At the launch event, Huawei executives said versions of HarmonyOS are running on 85 million devices. Huawei had released the operating system in October 2024.
