RGB protocol is now live: asset tokenization arrives on Bitcoin and Lightning Network

The RGB mainnet brings assets and tokens directly to the Bitcoin network, maintaining decentralization and privacy.

On July 17th, the official launch of the RGB mainnet version was announced. The RGB protocol allows users to create, transfer, and manage assets – from stablecoins to NFTs, from tokens to financial instruments – operating within the Bitcoin and Lightning Network infrastructure.

RGB uses client-side validation, eliminating the need for intermediaries, federations, or external validators. This method aims to preserve Bitcoin’s principles of decentralization, privacy, and self-custody.

Products and services already active

RGB v0.11.1 coincided with the launch of several ready-to-use services:

  • LNFI Network presents itself as the financial infrastructure for multi-asset LN, supporting token issuance, trading, and management with real-time liquidity;
  • Bitcoin Tribe offers an application for issuing, sending, receiving, and exchanging RGB assets, maintaining custody of funds;
  • Bitmask provides a non-custodial wallet and infrastructure for RGB assets, supporting RGB20 and RGB21 tokens, with peer-to-peer marketplace for art and digital collections;
  • ThunderLink represents the full-stack infrastructure provider for RGB applications, offering REST APIs that allow companies and developers to integrate RGB assets simply;
  • Iris Wallet ensures RGB asset and Bitcoin management directly on the user’s device.

The formation of the RGB Protocol Association, announced on July 14th, represents a further step for the protocol’s evolution, aiming to accelerate development, coordination, and adoption of RGB technology on a global scale, through grant programs, educational initiatives, and promotional activities.

The association brings together players like Bitfinex, Fulgur Ventures, Bitmask by DIBA, Plan B Network, Boosty Labs, Kaleidoswap, ThunderStack, Bitcoin Tribe, and LNFI.

Viktor Ihnatiuk, co-founder of Boosty Labs, commented:

“With its programmability and privacy, and Lightning’s scalability, Bitcoin now has everything needed to build real applications. Boosty Labs and the RGB Association are proud to support this launch, and we believe the best is yet to come.”

Gideon Nwzem, founder of Bitmask, stated:

“With RGB now live on Bitcoin mainnet, the tooling around native, programmable assets is finally real. We’ve gone from prototypes to actual products – Bitmask now supports RGB20, and it’s just the beginning.”

Anant Tapadia, founder of Bitcoin Tribe, affirmed:

“This release marks a big step forward not just for RGB but for how people interact with assets on Bitcoin. With Bitcoin Tribe, you can issue, send, and manage assets freely, all while staying in control.“
